Information on the 3rd academic year

USB: it is necessary to enroll every semester (even when students stay in Linz).
JKU: enrollment continues automatically.

Topics (related to Bioinformatics) must be found upon students' initiative (together with the prospective supervisor).
It is recommended to start before the 6th semester.
Must have at least 30 pages.
Must be submitted at USB.

The thesis only needs to be defended on the side the thesis was supervised.
USB: The opponent is appointed by the head of the institute. It is typically a person without direct relations to the supervisor, possibly even from another university. The candidate gets the thesis defense questions one week before the defense takes place.
JKU: Defense within the Bachelor's seminar. Every student is required to give a 20 min presentation summarizing and evaluating the progress of his/her bachelor thesis. This presentation is followed by a short discussion. The final grade is determined by an assessment of the oral presentation and the quality of the presented evaluation.

Dates are in June or September.
The completion of the thesis is not a pre-requisite for registering for the state exam. However, the thesis should be submitted 1 1/2 months before the state exam. This period is required in Budweis for assigning opponents and for giving the supervisor and the opponent time for reading the thesis and writing their reviews.
Students bring the partial transcript of records and they need to hand in the completed record no later than 3 working days before the state examination.
Oral examinations in "Biology", "Bioinformatics" and "Computer Science" (each 15-20 min).
There will be a catalogue of questions.
